Project Evalaution

During this small transition project we had to re create a music video of an original song.Me and my group chose Adele someone like you.We chose this because we all liked the song, and thought it was practial and realistic enough to be able to re create.Over the next week we worked out what props/location/cast/filing/editing elements we need/needed to use.We did various research into making sure we had everything we needed in order ot re create a successful music video.

The initial research i found fairly interesting and simple,it was exciting making the preparations as i felt alot more organised before shooting the actual fim.As i had been researching all the areas that were needed to be covered. When it came to the actual filming i really enjoyed it,at first it proved difficult walking and moving the camera along with the model however after only a few tries i got the hang of it straight away/the green screen proved really handy for our fade shots,it allowed to film with a still background so when we came to edit it it was alot easier.

Filming on marina was also alot of fun to. Because i had never filmed properly outside in a location away form college before we had to make few adjustments, like when walking with the camera because we was walking backwards we had to have someone else in the group behind us,guiding us so we didnt fall over-but this didn't pose as a problem.Because of the natural wind also,it allowed us to easily create the blowing hair which was really helpful. Before going to this location we assembled a risk assesment which features earlier in the blog, which made us aware of any possible accidents that could occur. And this proved very helpful for us when we got there.

The most challenging part of this transition project was the actual filimg.Everything else i found fairly straight forward and easy, the filming wasn't very difficult but making usre it was fit for purpose and looked how we wanted it to,took a few tries. The difficult part was also keeping the lyrics in time,as we knew if we didnt,we we edited the film and sound together it wouldn't look good at all.But i felt our outcome worked just how we wanted it to,the lyrics were in time and i all turned out how we wanted it to when it came to editing.

When i start my A2 project next year i will do a few things differently.I will research alot more into exssiting music videos in order to get inspirations from all different aspects of a music video.I will also film for longer.By this i mean tuning the camera on for around 5 seconds longer than you normally would so we've got extra footage to work with,by doing this it will mean ill have more footage to edit rather than hardly any.Luckily we filmed enough to make our video successful but if we were a few seconds shorter it could've proved a problem. So when i start my A2 work, ill be more aware of this.

This task ahs helped me realise what the A2 is sort of like,it was like a little taster of what is to come. Its helped me as i feel its prepared me for whats to come, and has allowed me to get to grips of what next years course entails in a much condendesed way.It also allowed me to get sue to the editing suite and how the cmaera works,so when it comes to actually creating a video for my A level,i wont be held back and i will be able to get on straight away.Ive taken away knowledge from this experience. Its helped me build on what i already know and apply it to a task.Im really glad we did this transition task,i felel it was helpful in every way and not only was it fun,it allowed us to prepare and practice for the upcoming year.

Front Cover/Inside/CD/Back

Aswell as creating the music video we decided to design a front cover, inside, back and also create a design for the actual CD.The design we created was mostly inspired by Adeles previous album cover. We wanted to create something very similar,so you knew what its similiar to,but just featuring a different model. To create the front cover/inside/back and CD we used Photoshop. We did this because it was the most appropriate platform to use when designing. It allowed us to use very similar text to what features on the original album. It also let us edit the photos we were using and made the whole designing process a lot easier.

The front:

So this is our final front cover for the CD case.We used century gothic text and kept to the same colour scheme you'd expect to see Adele own album using. We ddi this to keep closely similar to what we are re creating so its noticeable. We decided we wanted to use a large photo of Reanna of the front with only the text alongside it.Keeping it simple looking like Adele album was the aim,and we feel we achieved this.We used Photoshop to edit the size of the photo easily and also used it to apply the text and change the colours of it.We chose Photoshop as we felt it was the best platform for designing on.

The inside:

This is the inside of our CD case, where the actual CD would feature on the right. We used this image from a screen shot during our music video. We chose this because we thought it was appealing on the eye,and gives you a little snapshot of what the music video has to offer. We also thought it wasnt extremely in your face which we liked,we loved the way you could see both the model and the location all in one.To create this we used Photoshop. We added a spin in the middle to highlight where the CD would bend.We chose to keep it word free, and just use a simplictic but eye capturing photo.

The CD:

This is the CD design we created. We got a plain CD image form google and created a design on this. This design was again inspired by Adele previous theme choice. We wanted to feature the face on the CD as,if the Cd case ever got lost of mis placed the CD its self is extremely noticeable. We again chose an image formt eh music video,we did the because we felt it showed our model Reanna in more emotional way, rather then a forced pose.We added the large 21 again as we felt not only did it look good bur it identified what CD it was.

The back:

Heres the back and spines on the CD case. This is the favourite side we created.I feel it all works really well, and looks realistic-something you could imagine seeing in the shops. We took direct inspiration from adeles previous album again, but used our own location image in the back ground. We used similar text, and kept all the songs the same names. We created all the little writing and added here labels below to create realsim once again.I think this looks realy realistic and the colours we used compliment each other greatly.

Our final music video

Here below is our final music video of Adele-someone like you. We've posted it here on Youtube so it can be viewed by lots of people. Were very proud of our final outcome and think it has been really successful. So here it is...

The filming process

During the next week we are going to film our music video. We've decided on  location of marina and the green screen to re create our music video.

At the beginning of the week we decided to film the section in the green screen as this we thought would be the easiest We set the tripod up and got our model to stand in fornt of a black curtain,so we achieved the dark background we wanted. We put the camera onto a tri pod in order for the shot to be steady, and so it didn't wobble all over-we found this to be really handy. We did several shoots of the small shot,so we had many to choose form and edit.We used a fan fan to help create wind within the studio,as we wanted the models hair to be blowing and this worked quite effectively. We carefully timed the movement changes of Adele in order so when we linked up to music the actions were in sync with the actual video, and this worked really well in allowing us to create a really successful video.

Our next location we filmed a day later on Hull Marina. We did this because it gave us the perfect location that features in Adeles video behind her.Upon filming this shoot we also took the tri pod out again, this time was because we needed to film the model walking and we felt although there will be some movement it would be alot less jerky that it would without the tripod. We did about 5 or 6 different shoots of the shot,we felt the first 2 went how we wanted to,but did several more just incase. Also while we was there we did a pan of the marina itself as a completely different shot.We did this because during the fade at the end of our video we needed footage to overlay on top of the other film.We did it in 2 different directions so we had a choice when matching it up to the original video, and this proved successful also.Over all the filming process of the video was a lot of fun,and proved a learning curve. It has made me alot more confident in creating videos. Our re creation of Adels someone like you video i feel went really well.

Cast List

Because of the type of music video we are doing we one need 1 actor/actress.Becasue Adele is the only person who features in the video,no one else is needed. At first we looked at trying to find a possible actrewss that looked similar to Adele but this proved hard,we then thought how although we are re creating a music video the actress featured doesnt have to be identical,as where sort of promoting a new artist.Just like famous artists performing covers.

We wanted to find someone who was out going and could re an act a sad diminer that Adele has.Because the song its sad and meaniful,we wanted someone who could easily portray emotion,so the music video would be sucsessful.

After long dileberation,we decided the actress we are going to use is Reanna Wray.Reanna is apart of our media group, and we felt she has the best ability in order for it to be sucsessful. As she does dance/drama we felt this would also play to her strenghts, making the over all process of filimg the video less scary.

We are very excited to start filimg with Reanna, and challenging ourselves to re create a music video that is sucsessful and realistic in its own way.We all feel Reanna is a really good choice of actree to use,and are excited to start filimg with her.

Lyric Timings

In order for our music video to be successful we needed to work out lyric timings in order for the model to perform and mouth the words of Adele successfully The 60 second clip where doing only has 2 main shots,as Adele is featured walking alongside a river for the first main shot.Because of this the lyric timings are fairly simple however spaces in between breathing are also important. Here below are our lyric timings for Adeles music video.

The first shot we see is 42 seconds long due to the fact that it is just a pan of her walking beside some water. This long shot included her singing the most part of our 60 second clip.At 3:12 seonds she breathes very quickly then carrys on straight away.At 3:15 the word 'how' is elongated for 3 seconds.'Bitter sweet' is also elongated for 4 seconds, and then this is followd by 'this would taste' said all singly with tiny gaps. After this there is a 3 seconds pause where nothing is said.At 3:30 the word 'you' is elongated itself 2 seconds, the song carries on fluently straight after also. The owrd you in the next line is all lengthend once again, this time for 3 seconds but also merged into the word of 'to'.Then from 3:48 the word instead in elongated for 4 seconds and this brings us to the end of this shot.

The second shot is 18 seconds which is a fade of Adele's face over the background of a river side and fountain area.During this last shot their is no lip singing needed and the lyrics are voiced over Adele herself while she is pictured doing something else.So in this part we dont need to manage lyric timings, just make sure when this shot starts, this second shot does also.

Risk Assesment

When and while filing our music video we decided to create a risk assessment to highlight the risks that may occur. We did this to look at safety issues, making sure where we are filiming is in a safe environment and will allow us to fil without any complications. These are some of the risk assessment points we came up with below:

-Be careful not to fall into the water.
-Be careful that character does not fall over whilst she is turning.
-Check that it is not going to be too windy to film.
-Be careful of traffic of nearby traffic.
-Ensure that character is not allergic to make-up used in filming.

-Be aware that robbery could take place (camera or equipment could get stolen).
-Ensure the camera is placed on the tripod correctly,so it doesnt fall off an break.

Prop List

Location List

Location List

So now we know what music video were going to do,weve looked at where would be best to shoot the video and in which location. As the music video features only a few shots, our location choices do no need to be all different. In the video Adele is pictured next to a river/dock,so we thought the marina in Hull would be a good place. We have various ideas of different locations of where we want to shoot and these are a few of the possible locations:

  • Hull Marina

  • Queens Gardens

  • Green Screen

  • Near the Deep

  • Victoria Dock

  • Near the River Humber

  • Hessle Foreshore

We narrowed it down to these possible locations above as they fit our criteria. After looking at the 60 second clip we want to re create,we found these locations in Hull would work best. This is because Adele features walking along the edge of a river for the most part,so we looked at possible locations that fit this. After deliberating on locations we decided out of all these possible ones that Hull Marina and The green screen would work best.

We thought this because the marina features the river just like the Adele video,it also has a path which will allow us to film down it.Its the most suitable location for this section of the video,as it offeres the best results. We've also chosen the green screen. We want to film here because of the end part of this clip.We want to re create the close up of Adele including the fade effect, and we feel this could be best achieved here.

Our chosen music video

For this transition media project me and my group have to re create a music video of our choiuce, and create a CD cover to go with it.We have all allocated jobs which weve distributed using the check list.We decided to re create this music video by Adele below.

Over the next few weeks me and my group are going to be re creating this music video to Adele-Someone like you.We looked at various artists in the charts to look at their music videos,to see what we liked, and what we thought would be appropriate to re create. We found alot of them was very complicated using various props and acters but finally decided to re create Adeles award winning son Someone Like You.We chose this because its a very meaningful video, yet simplistic in what it does.

Were only allowed to do a 60 second video so had to do a snapshot of the video itself. We played the music video over and over to try and find a minute of the song we really liked, and what looked the most intresting ti re create. We decided to do a snapshot of the song from 3:10 to 4:10,and this is the minute we will be re creating for our final video.
