Digipak
In order for me to gather a better understanding and knowledge of what goes into making a digipak im going to conduct some reearch into various exsiting products to see how theyre made and what goes into them in order to make them sucsessful.As my musiv vidoe audio is based within the POP genre im going to focus on the digipaks mage within this area as i feel it will give me some consicse information of what works well for this type of genre.
The first artist im going to look at is Katy Perry.As world wide known POP artist i felt looking at her previous and current didgipaks will give me a really good undersdtanding of how she portrays herself on these aswell,as theyre are a huge selling point for the CD they must be made well.Here album Teenage Dream was a world wide sucussessdful album in amny countries so i thought id research into this..
Here above is her full digipak front,inside and and the back.The first thing youd see when buying this albim is her.Shes the main focual point.As you cans ee on this front cover she is laied in quite a seductive pose surrounded by pink fluffy 'clouds'.The front cover colour shceme is also very conventional to ehr genre,the baby pink juxtaposed against the blue works really well together.These so called cute and pretty colours are what youd asociate with the pop genre so therefore work really well for her as an artist.Her full naked body is exposed form a side angled view.Some emdia theorists would say this is done on purpose to sexualise the woman and make her more appealing to a audience.By explotuing ehrself shes drawing attention to herself.Theres also emphasis on ehr curves which is said to be another way of making a women look powerful and dominating something that many audiences find very attratcive.This pose also makes her look empowering,the facts hes showing most of her body suggest shes cimofotable and proud to be a women,while oouzes sex appeal for a male audience also.
The font ties in well with the over all theme to.It almost looks quite childlike,not aiming itself at a more mature audeince.The teenage dream font almost resembles candy canes.The red and white swirlyness is something youd associate with candy canes of teenage sewwts.Again a really wacky pop desgin that resembles somethign children will know of.Again lookign closely at the image,the fact shes called ehr album teenage dream coorelates well with the chosen background.Being laid in what looks like pink fluffy clouds in the sky,it resembles what many many picture a dream to be like.Not only this its visualy appelaing o the eye.
Moving on to the back of the cover,the theme continues.This creates continuity which keeps the album looking as one.All the colours are continued tot he back,and i like the little touches of flowers replacing the 'O' in some of the words.I feel ti addds a really girly touch/The barcide is also evident on the top right,and this is something i need to remeber to include on my Digipak also.The wya the dream like backgorund is shot from a different angle and sued on the back i feel works really well,and is almost a continuation from the front.
I love the way when you open the album the actuall CD is red and white in that sort of cady cane pattern.I feel it looks evry unique and fiferent and igf you were to loose the case youd still know easily whos CD it is.This allows the convnetonal pop elements to present in every aspect of the album.Having a colourful CD only adds to the selling point for her.For the consumers,it looks pretty.Inside, on either side of the Cd there is 2 fairly close up images of her.These images are shot on a black background and seperate themselves form the overall theme.They allow her to look evry dominat and endearing.The wya shes wearing a crown also is a clever use of mise en scene to represnt her as an icon.The bold red lips and heavy make up are evry convnetional to POP and work really well in portaying her as a pretty woman.Inside you also get a large free poster of the mian image on the front cover.I really like this idea as a selling point.Having a free element to the digipak makes it more appelaing to thsoe buying it.It also encourages more exposure.If someone bought the album and stuck the poster up in their room,and there freinds saw it and liked it it could create an almost domino efffect.
Looking at this digipak as a whole i can see what it'd eb sucsessful.Thr bright coventoonal colours mixed with the represntation of herself an an artist all works really well.The theme has continuity which allowes the digipak to come together as one.Its given me some really good ideas for my own peronsal digipak.Its inspired me to remeber to keep everyhting convnetional to my own genre.I feel this digipak was a good example to look because of how sucsessful it was.From this reserach im going to take away with me new ideas,and possible layouts/designs for my own.
